Sound files of the ear trainer (zeromile.tools/ear/) ==================================================== The nine files in this folder are short recordings of single notes of a real piano, a real guitar and a real flute. They are used by the ear trainer only. The pure tone of the ear trainer is not a file: the browser makes it. Where they come from -------------------- All nine come from the University of Iowa Musical Instrument Samples (MIS), created by Lawrence Fritts, Director of the Electronic Music Studios and Professor of Composition at the University of Iowa. Page: https://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS.html Fetched: 2026-10-02 Licence sentence on that page, read on 2026-10-02: "Since 1997, these recordings have been freely available on this website and may be downloaded and used for any projects, without restrictions." What was done to each recording ------------------------------- The same steps for every file, done by a script of ours that is not published on this site (it runs in Node, uses no other software and reads the AIFF files itself): 1. Mixed to one channel (the mean of the channels, where the source has two). 2. Low rumble removed with a high-pass filter (Butterworth, 4th order) at 0.45 times the note's frequency, at most 120 Hz. The filter frequency of each file is in the table. 3. Trimmed: 1.1 s kept, from 3 ms before the start of the note. The start point in the source file is in the table, in seconds. 4. Resampled to 32 kHz (windowed sinc low-pass, Kaiser window). 5. Faded in over 3 ms and out over 30 ms, so the file starts and ends at zero. 6. Level: multiplied by one number per file (the gain in the table), so that every file has the same average (RMS) level, 0.14 of full scale, over its first 0.7 s. No compression and no other change of the sound. 7. Saved as WAV, 16 bit, one channel, 32 kHz. Each file is 70,444 bytes. "Measured" is the frequency of the note's fundamental in the finished file. The guitar notes and two of the flute notes are 11 to 21 cents off concert pitch in the recording. That does not matter for the ear trainer, which plays the same file at two speeds and asks only about the difference.
